Page three is more photos of the first race in 1963. These images reflect scenes around Corpus Christi Bay, where standing waves tend to swamp boats and make paddling tougher than nails. Even sails are not that much help if the boat is full of water! With opposing wind, high waves and tired muscles resulting from the strain of paddling a boat about 300 miles in as short a time period as humanly possible, who wants to carry that water? It can get there by itself!
The black and white photos are from the collections of Jim Brown of Plano, Texas and Jeff Brown of Bedford, Texas, whose father founded the race. Appreciation for their efforts in creating the true story of the Texas Water Safari web site, and for their loan of these photos for this purpose, is gratefully acknowledged. |
