Minstrel Man
A Song by Marc W. McCord
(C) February 22, 2002

We first met in Dallas so many years ago.
We were young, still in our teens,
had everywhere to go.
After graduation we went our separate ways.
You got married, had some kids.
I put on a show.

Lured by a minstrel life, that is what I chose.
You went through a man or two
in Tempe, I suppose.
At a crossroads in my life I roamed alone and free.
I went through a girl or two
like I was changing clothes.

The sands of time were shifting, I was growing old.
You still looked so young and sweet.
And I growing bold.
The next time that I heard from you I was fifty-three.
Primed for love, the stars above
led you back to me.

(Chorus) I used to be a minstrel man, sang my songs all over this land.
Love came so easily to me.
Now I'm sleeping 'neath the stars, in the backseat of my car.
Love went so easily from me.

We spent time together in the desert air.
In passion's throes I took you clothes,
and then messed up your hair.
But casual conversations proved more than you could take.
I packed my things, and headed east.
You didn't really care.

Now I'm a lonely man with nowhere left to turn.
All we've been through, I think of you
and lessons that I learned.
In times like these I still reflect on everything I lost.
I'm headed down to river town
to pay the final cost.

(Chorus) I used to be a minstrel man, sang my songs all over this land.
Love came so easily to me.
Now I'm sleeping 'neath the stars, in the backseat of my car.
Love went so easily from me.
Now I cry myself to sleep. There is no more counting sheep.
Love went so easily from me. Love went so easily from me.
